Recap of Opening Day

The Next Shane Matthews?

South Carolina quarterback Blake Mitchell sure looked like it during the first two drives against Central Florida. The Gamecocks only won 24-15, but the future looks good for coach Steve Spurrier.

Boney Maroney

Minnesota running back Laurence Maroney looked like Superman in the first quarter of the Golden Gophers 41-10 romp over Tulsa. He will get chance to pad his stats at home against Colorado State and Florida Atlantic the next two weeks, but his real first chance to impress Heisman voters comes against the vaunted Purdue defense September 24.

Potato Studs
Idaho look respectable in a 12 point loss to cross state rival Washington State.

Jay Cutler Heisman Worthy?

Vanderbilt senior Jay Cutler is the best quarterback in the Southeastern Conference, but few have ever seen him play. The Commodores won a rare season opener over Wake Forest 24-20 on the road. Cutler threw for 276 yards and ran for another 89, with one touchdown through the air.

Ducks Display New Offense

Maybe the Oregon player's minds were on the victims of Hurricane Katrina, being sheltered only a few hundred yards away at the Astrodome. The Ducks new offensive coordinator Gary Crowton introduced the "Oregon" offense. It is very similar to what he ran as BYU's head coach the last four years, and the spread.

The Ducks did not look to impressive against Houston, but finally wore out the Cougar defense in 38-24 win. With one more tune up against 1AA power Montana, Oregon should be ready for their back to back show downs with 24th ranked Fresno State and number one USC at Autzen Stadium.
